Guides & Troubleshooting

Step-by-step solutions, common problem fixes, and best practices for using Windows Media Creation Tool successfully.

Deployment Sequence

How to Create a Bootable USB Drive

REQUIREMENTS A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space, a working internet connection, and a Windows PC to run the tool.

  1. 1

    Download Windows Media Creation Tool

Visit our download page and save the mediacreationtool.exe file to your computer. Verify the SHA256 hash if possible before running the file.

  2. 2

    Run the Application

Double-click the downloaded executable. Accept the license terms when prompted. If your antivirus blocks execution, verify the file hash and refer to our antivirus guide below.

  3. 3

    Select "Create Installation Media"

When the tool asks what you want to do, choose the option to create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC.

  4. 4

    Choose Language, Edition, and Architecture

Select the Windows edition, language, and whether you need 32-bit or 64-bit. Uncheck "Use the recommended options for this PC" if you are creating media for a different computer.

  5. 5

    Select USB Flash Drive

Choose USB flash drive as your media type. Insert your USB drive and select it from the list. Warning: All data on the selected USB drive will be erased. Double-check you have selected the correct drive to avoid data loss.

  6. 6

    Wait for Download and Creation

The tool will download Windows ISO files (over 3 GB) and copy them to your USB drive. This can take over an hour on slow internet connections. Do not disconnect the USB drive or close the program during this process.

  7. 7

    Boot from USB

Once complete, your bootable USB is ready. Insert it into the target PC, enter the BIOS/UEFI boot menu, and boot from the USB drive to begin Windows installation.

Upgrade Protocol

How to Upgrade Windows In Place

  1. 1

    Back Up Your Important Files

Before any upgrade, back up documents, photos, and critical data to an external drive or cloud storage. While in-place upgrades typically preserve files, backups protect against unexpected issues.

  2. 2

    Run Windows Media Creation Tool

Launch the tool on the PC you want to upgrade. Accept the license terms.

  3. 3

    Select "Upgrade This PC Now"

Choose the option to upgrade this PC now. The tool will download the latest Windows files and begin the upgrade process seamlessly.

  4. 4

    Follow On-Screen Prompts

The tool handles the rest. Your PC will restart several times during the upgrade. Keep it plugged into power and do not interrupt the process.

Configuration Matrix

Choosing the Right Edition & Architecture

When creating installation media, the tool prompts you to select the edition of Windows you need, its language, and your PC's architecture. Here is how to make the right choices:

64-bit vs 32-bit

Most modern PCs use 64-bit processors. Choose 64-bit unless you are installing on very old hardware that only supports 32-bit. Using the wrong architecture will cause installation failure.

Windows Editions

Select the edition matching your license: Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education. The tool works with all versions and languages of the Windows 10 and Windows 11 operating systems.

Language Selection

Available languages include English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch, Polish, and Portuguese. Choose the language you want for the installed Windows interface.

For Another PC

Uncheck "Use the recommended options for this PC" when creating media for a different computer. Manually select the target PC's edition, language, and architecture.

Fault Diagnostics

Common Problems & Solutions

ERROR CODE

Error: "mediacreationtool.exe is not a valid win32 application"

This error typically occurs when you download the wrong architecture version (64-bit tool on a 32-bit system) or when the downloaded file is corrupted.

  • Verify your system is 32-bit or 64-bit via Settings > System > About.
  • Re-download the correct version from a verified source.
  • Verify the SHA256 hash matches the expected value.
  • Ensure the download completed fully without interruption.
DOWNLOAD FAIL

Tool Fails or Crashes During Download

Windows ISO files are over 3 GB in size. Slow or unstable internet connections can cause download failures.

  • Use a wired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi when possible.
  • Disable VPN or proxy services that may interfere with downloads.
  • Free up disk space on your system drive (at least 10 GB recommended).
  • Run the tool as Administrator.
  • Restart the tool and try again during off-peak hours.
USB DETECT

USB Drive Not Detected

The tool may not list your USB drive if it does not meet requirements or is in use by another program.

  • Use a USB drive with at least 8 GB capacity.
  • Format the USB drive to FAT32 or let the tool format it automatically.
  • Try a different USB port, preferably USB 2.0 if USB 3.0 causes issues.
  • Close other programs that may be accessing the USB drive.
  • Remove and reinsert the USB drive, then click Refresh in the tool.
DATA LOSS

Wrong Drive Selected / Data Loss

Selecting the wrong target drive when creating installation media will erase all data on that drive. This is one of the most reported issues with the tool.

  • Always verify the drive letter and label before confirming.
  • Remove all unnecessary USB drives to reduce confusion.
  • Never select your main system drive (typically C:).
  • Back up any data on the USB drive before proceeding.
UPGRADE STALL

Upgrade Stuck or Frozen

In-place upgrades can appear frozen during file copying or configuration phases, which is normal for extended periods.

  • Wait at least 2-3 hours before assuming the upgrade has failed.
  • Ensure the PC is connected to power and does not enter sleep mode.
  • Check disk activity light on your PC for signs of progress.
  • If truly stuck for over 4 hours, force restart and try creating bootable media instead.
Security Alert

Antivirus Warnings Explained

Antivirus and security software sometimes flag Windows Media Creation Tool as potentially unwanted or suspicious. This is typically a false positive caused by heuristic detection of tools that download executables, write to boot sectors, or format USB drives.

Legitimate security scans of the official file show a clean result: virus free, spyware free, and malware free with a security score of 100 out of 100.

What To Do When Antivirus Blocks the Tool

  1. 1

Do not disable your antivirus permanently. Only proceed if you have verified the file source and hash.

  2. 2

Run certutil -hashfile mediacreationtool.exe SHA256 and compare with the hash on our download page.

  3. 3

Add a temporary exception in Windows Defender or your third-party antivirus for the verified file.

  4. 4

After completing your installation media, you can remove the exception if desired.

Operational Standards

Best Practices

Always Back Up First

Before any upgrade or clean install, back up all important files. Even in-place upgrades can occasionally fail, and clean installs will erase all data on the drive.

Verify File Integrity

Check SHA256 hashes after every download. This confirms you have an authentic, unmodified copy of the official Microsoft tool.

Use Quality USB Drives

Use a reliable brand USB 3.0 drive with at least 8 GB capacity. Cheap or failing drives can cause corrupted installation media.

Double-Check Drive Selection

Always confirm the correct USB drive before the tool formats it. Removing extra drives from your PC reduces the risk of selecting the wrong one.

Stable Internet Connection

Connect via ethernet for large downloads. The Windows ISO exceeds 3 GB and can take over an hour on slow connections.

Keep Power Connected

Laptops should be plugged in during upgrades and media creation. Power loss mid-process can corrupt installation media or the operating system.
